The Austin, Texas based musician, Sam Hodgson, is a name that you should make yourself aware of. Hodgson is a folk singer/songwriter that has a style of writing derived from Bob Dylan's influence and likely from artists like Townes Van Zandt and John Prine as well. His newest song, “Talkin’ WWIII Blues” is what truly hooked me on his music. The writing on this track is not only incredibly insightful but also some of the most creative writing I’ve heard from a smaller artist in a while. It is clear how passionate Hodgson is about the topics he writes about. It is really refreshing to hear lyrics so rooted in fact and expressing your beliefs about current issues as opposed to copy and paste AI generated mush. It's exciting that there are artists in this next generation that are honing in their talents to create timeless works of art, even if the topics are heavy and upsetting.
This focus on his songwriting is not to dismiss his skills as a musician. Though you can definitely hear the true folk roots come through while listening to his discography, there is also an Americana/bluegrass style to his compositions that really adds some great modern tunes to the genre.
Sam Hodgson is an artist with range and incredible talent and he is definitely someone that people should be listening to more. If not listening to, then begging to collaborate with in the writing room.
